    <title>January Meeting</title>
    <link>https://broad-town.co.uk/Community-Groups/Womens-Institute-WI/ID/2515/January-Meeting</link>
    <description>Starting off 2020 we had a very interesting and humorous talk from John Jameson Davis, a handwriting expert, on how he comes to the conclusion a signature or piece of writing is fake or real.&amp;nbsp; He analyses the problem for up to a week&amp;nbsp;and banks and solicitors&amp;nbsp; often ask him his view on suspect cases.&amp;nbsp; John brought along some signatures of famous people so we could relate what he was saying to their personalities - it all seemed to fit well!&amp;nbsp; He also showed us the tell-tale signs of fraud in handwriting.&amp;nbsp; We then had a show of hands as to which resolutions we wished to pursue this year out of a call to increase potential stem cell donor registration, female crash test dummies, end modern slavery, time to talk about death and dying and protect our precious helium.&amp;nbsp; Next month we have a talk about the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation.&amp;nbsp; 15

    <description>We held our Christmas Party in Broad Town Village Hall last night trying our best to make beautiful bead&amp;nbsp;and parchment Christmas tree decorations - some of us were more successful than others!&amp;nbsp; This was followed by a lovely buffet and a quiz on TV Personalities.&amp;nbsp; A great end to a successful year for Broad Town WI!&amp;nbsp;

    <description>An officer from the Swindon NIght Shelter came and talked about how their organisation&amp;nbsp;offers a hot meal, shower and bed for the night on Friday evenings giving&amp;nbsp;the homeless and less fortunate people a place to relax, chat and get advice.&amp;nbsp; They are also connected with The Gate Cafe and the Hub and Coffee Shop together with the Haven Day Care Centre where needy people can grab a meal and some support during the day.&amp;nbsp; An excellent and worthwhile organisation.&amp;nbsp; Their aim is to gain the trust of their customers and get them into accommodation when they are ready.&amp;nbsp;

    <description>Sharon Tombs from Dressability spoke about how her organisation adapts clothes for disabled people.&amp;nbsp; None of us had heard of Dressability which is in West Swindon but, as Sharon showed us, by adding invisible zips, velcro or magnetic strips people&amp;#39;s ordinary clothes can be adapted for their individual needs.&amp;nbsp; They also make fancy dress costumes for terminally ill children and she showed us many examples of the perfectly invisible adaptations she and her very talented colleagues have made for people.&amp;nbsp; Sadly, as with all charities, they have to find an enormous amount of money each year.&amp;nbsp;

    <description>We all enjoyed&amp;nbsp;this&amp;nbsp;year&amp;#39;s Christmas Party in the hall.&amp;nbsp; Some of us were better than others at guessing which essential oil was what in Tracey Holland&amp;#39;s quiz!&amp;nbsp; We also had a place name quiz organised by Pam&amp;nbsp;Howells before&amp;nbsp;eating the lovely food we all brought.&amp;nbsp; We rounded off the evening with a beetle drive which Janet Clewley had&amp;nbsp;arranged.&amp;nbsp; It was a fitting end to&amp;nbsp;a great WI&amp;nbsp;year and we are all looking forward to our meetings in 2019!&amp;nbsp;

    <description>Members and guests&amp;nbsp;were treated to a very passionate and informative talk entitled &amp;lsquo;Views of the Universe&amp;rsquo; from two members of Swindon Stargazers.&amp;nbsp; We also went outside where it was fascinating to see the surface of the moon with its craters through a telescope. &amp;nbsp;No little green men were sighted!&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;Our December meeting is&amp;nbsp;our Christmas Party for current members.&amp;nbsp;

    <description>We all managed to produce some wonderful flower decorations for bottles and were amazed at how easy it was.&amp;nbsp;Very simple and effective.&amp;nbsp;

Our November meeting is open to all and we should have an interesting and informative evening on Star Gazing.

    <link>https://broad-town.co.uk/Community-Groups/Womens-Institute-WI/ID/2452/September-Meeting</link>
    <description>Kate John gave an excellent and interactive talk on occupational therapy.&amp;nbsp; Her work is really important in enabling people to find ways of going about their normal life so they can be discharged from hospital and hopefully live back in their homes.&amp;nbsp; Simple tasks like making a cup of tea, peeling vegetables and climbing stairs can be overwhelming for people who, for instance, have had a stroke, a brain injury or have dementia.&amp;nbsp; Using simple props we&amp;nbsp;saw&amp;nbsp;what OTs can help us do to&amp;nbsp;get the most out of life after a spell of ill health.&amp;nbsp;

    <description>Hilary Bowen showed us how to make silver jewellery out of silver clay at our July meeting.&amp;nbsp; It was amazing that something so beautiful could come out of a small piece of clay.&amp;nbsp; During the month some members went to the Trowbridge Sewage Works to see how waste is disposed of.&amp;nbsp; The site prides itself&amp;nbsp;on dealing with 100% of the waste on site.&amp;nbsp; Other members took part in a Walking Netball taster session which was extremely good fun&amp;nbsp;and&amp;nbsp;way more energetic than one would think!&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;The WI is hoping to get sessions up and running in the autumn.&amp;nbsp;

We have no meeting in August but are intending to walk from Broad Town up to&amp;nbsp;The Crown at Broad Hinton for a meal.&amp;nbsp; Our September meeting (on 19th)&amp;nbsp;is&amp;nbsp;a talk by Kate John on Occupational Therapy.&amp;nbsp; Feel free to&amp;nbsp;join us.&amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp;

    <description>At our meeting on 20 June we went to the Royal Wootton Bassett Museum to hand over a scrapbook detailing the life of Broad Town WI during the year of the Centenary of the WI so that it can be stored there to be enjoyed by visitors over the next 100 years!&amp;nbsp; There was so much to see in the museum and we were surprised how RWB has changed over time.&amp;nbsp; The staff were very informative and friendly and we celebrated with a glass of fizz before going over to the Cross Keys for an informal meeting.&amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;

    <title>EVENT: COMMUNITY HEARTBEAT TRUST DEFIBRILLATOR SEMINAR</title>
    <link>https://broad-town.co.uk/Community-Groups/Womens-Institute-WI/ID/2400/EVENT-COMMUNITY-HEARTBEAT-TRUST-DEFIBRILLATOR-SEMINAR</link>
    <description>As many of you may already have seen, we now have a defibrillator installed on the outside of the Village Hall.&amp;nbsp; Hopefully by the time you read this it will be fully operational.&amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; It is very simple to use, and talks you through all the things you have to do to use it.&amp;nbsp; HOWEVER IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT YOU ALWAYS PHONE 999 BEFORE FETCHING IT.&amp;nbsp; This will ensure that an ambulance is on its way as soon as possible,&amp;nbsp; the ambulance service will also give you the access code for the box it is kept in.&amp;nbsp; In addition they will tell you other things you should do to help the patient survive.

As part of the package we have purchased from the Community Heartbeat Trust we have the opportunity to hold an awareness session.&amp;nbsp; We have taken advantage of this and it will be held at 10.00 am on March 10th in the Village Hall (It takes 2 hours). They will be demonstrating the use of defibrillators and explaining how the equipment works and the benefits to the community in saving precious minutes in the treatment of sudden cardiac arrest.&amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp;There will also be some basic first aid training eg how to perform CPR and how to put a patient in the rescue position.&amp;nbsp; Everyone is welcome to come along; there is no need to book.

Broad Town WI decided last year they would like to raise money to install a defibrillator in the village in memory of Rosie McLaren who had recently passed away.&amp;nbsp; She had always been very involved in village life, helping anyone who was sick, bereaved or lonely.&amp;nbsp; She was also a very supportive member of the Church and WI among other things.&amp;nbsp; We thought it would be a fitting tribute.

Finally we would like to thank Broad Town Parish Council, and the Area Board for their help and support when we were raising funds.&amp;nbsp; A special thank you to the Parish Council for also agreeing to take on the on going costs.

We hope you can join us.

    <description>This month Purton Peartree Pealers treated us to a demonstration of hand bell ringing with a short talk on the background of ringing. The sound produced was lovely and it was interesting to learn about the basics of producing a lovely sound. We enjoyed having a go and with intense concentration and much help we managed to produce a recognisable tune.

    <description>This month we enjoyed a talk by speaker Margaret Hiscock from Wiltshire Scrap Store who explained that the charity has volunteers who collect scrap eg fabric, plastic and leather&amp;nbsp; from companies which would otherwise go to landfill sites. Groups from schools, play groups to museums come to the Store in Lacock and purchase bags of scrap for use in various craft and art projects. The public can also donate fabric, buttons, knitting yarn and buy bags of scraps or kits from the store. Volunteers are always welcome and some doing work experience go on to full time work. Advisors are available to help such as with a Chippenham project to make a Chinese dragon. After this interesting talk Margaret produced kits of scraps produced by volunteers at the Store and encouraged everyone to try one. Eventually all were completed.

This month (October 18th) we will be in the Village Hall for a Hand Bell Ringing demonstration with Libbie Sheppard of the Purton Peartree Pealers.&amp;nbsp; We should all get the chance to have a go and try out our skills.

    <description>For our meeting in July we enjoyed a demonstration of Indian cooking by Savita Ladva who is a friend of one of our members. Savita was both educational and fun and showed us how to make both meat and vegetable curries from scratch using an array of spices from cinnamon to paprika with some garlic and ginger thrown in for good measure. We had a tasting session of chicken curry, chickpea curry and potato curry with rice and had a go at rolling fresh chapattis. The Village Hall has never smelt so good. We are hoping to be able to put some of her recipes on our website in the near future so look out for that. &amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;

    <description>Our speaker in May was Alistair Garrard. Alistair is a former RAF Dog Handler and Trainer. He told us how after he joined the RAF he spent some time as an &amp;lsquo;intruder&amp;rsquo; complete with padded jacket &amp;ndash; getting regularly attacked by guard dogs in training! He had a very interesting career which took him to Cyprus, (where his RAF base was attacked by gunmen), Baghdad, Afghanistan, St Kitts, Malaysia and Kenya &amp;ndash; some of that time spent with private security companies. While in the RAF he was in the Dog Demonstration Team and also trained dogs and handlers for Firearms &amp;amp; Explosives detection and Drug detection for Customs searches. He was joined by his Golden Retriever Dexter who was charming and very popular with the audience.

Fred told us how his interest in wild flora was escalated following an unpleasant experience as a boy with a poisonous mushroom and how there are over 12,300 species of mushroom of which Fred still eats a number of safe ones regularly. He told us how to make a delicious wild garlic and nettle soup and explained how to forage by the seashore - giving members the opportunity to try pickled &amp;lsquo;Chicken of the woods&amp;rsquo; a type of fungus and Rosehip Brandy. Fred&amp;rsquo;s website is www.thewildsideoflife.co.uk.

    <description>BTWI swapped Wiltshire for London&amp;#39;s theatre land and visited the West End premiere of The Girls. The musical is based on the 2003 Calendar Girls film. Penned by Gary Barlow and featuring lyrics and a book by the film&amp;rsquo;s original screenwriter Tim Firth.

The Girls is based on a real life story about a Women&amp;rsquo;s Institute group who fundraise for a local hospital by posing for a nude calendar. The group become a media sensation and their heart-warming story follows the close friendships in the group, as well as the strained personal lives.

    <link>https://broad-town.co.uk/Community-Groups/Womens-Institute-WI/ID/1341/January-Meeting-2017</link>
    <description>In January our speaker was Janet Bultitude a Graphologist.&amp;nbsp; She gave an interesting talk about what our handwriting shows about our characters.&amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp;The slant, the shape, the width of stokes, and even the pressure used shows what we are like. We also voted on this year&amp;#39;s National WI suggestions for a resolution to be campaigned for in 2017.&amp;nbsp; The favourite from Broad Town was to support women&amp;#39;s refuges.
Next month (15th) our speaker will be George Tarte from the St John&amp;#39;s Ambulance who will give us a First Aid update including how to use of a defibrillator. We are a friendly group and welcome new members.&amp;nbsp; Our meetings are generally held on the third Wednesday of the month in the Village Hall.&amp;nbsp; If you are interested in visiting us, please contact Kate on 01793 731536.&amp;nbsp; We are also on the Broad Town Village website and on Facebook.

    <link>https://broad-town.co.uk/Community-Groups/Womens-Institute-WI/ID/1331/November-Meeting-2016</link>
    <description>This month our speaker was Siobhan Neill a cognitive therapy&amp;nbsp;counsellor. &amp;nbsp;She&amp;nbsp;showed&amp;nbsp;us breathing techniques to help&amp;nbsp;calm and de-stress us. &amp;nbsp;She also described ways to make ourselves feel more confident by using different postures and mindfulness.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;In her practice she also uses hypnotherapy to cure phobias but unfortunately she wasn&amp;rsquo;t able to show us this. &amp;nbsp;It was a very interesting talk and everyone seemed to enjoy it.

Also this month we held a Quiz evening in the Village Hall. &amp;nbsp;It was a challenging quiz brilliantly set by Jeff Hartley. &amp;nbsp;He was ably helped by his wife Beth and son Jonathan. &amp;nbsp;Everyone enjoyed themselves, and the ploughman&amp;#39;s supper seemed to go down well. Thanks must go to all WI members who helped set up the Hall and prepare the food. &amp;nbsp;Also a big thank you to the bar staff Trevor, Matt and Brian who helped with the setting up and clearing away too. &amp;nbsp;A profit of &amp;pound;112 was made which will enable us to pay for a couple of speakers next year.

We are a friendly group and welcome new members.&amp;nbsp; Our meetings are generally held on the third Wednesday of the month in the Village Hall.&amp;nbsp; If you are interested in visiting us please contact Kate on&amp;nbsp;01793 731536.&amp;nbsp; We are also on the Broad Town Village website and on Facebook.

    <link>https://broad-town.co.uk/Community-Groups/Womens-Institute-WI/ID/1326/October-Meeting-2016</link>
    <description>This month&amp;nbsp;Miranda Marsh came to talk to us about a visit to Mongolia where she worked as a volunteer for the Christina Noble Children&amp;#39;s Foundation for 2 months. &amp;nbsp;While she was there she lived in a Mongolian yurt (a ger) in an orphanage on the out skirts of Ulan Bator. &amp;nbsp;The children in the orphanage often arrive very traumatised by abuse, neglect and abandonment. There is a serious drink problem in Mongolia which is often at the root of their problems. &amp;nbsp;Her role was to help the adults in the orphanage shake off the austere regime left behind by the Russians and learn to play and interact lovingly with the children to give them a sense of belonging and security. &amp;nbsp;Even in the few weeks she was there she was rewarded by seeing the children become happier and more relaxed. &amp;nbsp;She hopes to return next year to see how things have progressed. &amp;nbsp;It was an inspiring and moving talk.

Unfortunately our speaker for next month has just dropped out so we are having to find a replacement. &amp;nbsp;So at this stage we cannot tell you who that will be.

    <description>Our speakers this month were Graham Barnes and Jenny Oakshot from the Marlborough branch of the University of the Third Age. &amp;nbsp;They showed a very interesting film in which members talked about the enjoyment they got from learning new things by joining the various groups available in their areas. &amp;nbsp;In the groups the members share knowledge and help each other learn, one member usually taking the lead. &amp;nbsp;Topics vary from languages, and walking to things like DIY and quilt making. Then Graham and Jenny talked about their own experiences and how they have made many friends, had wonderful outings and holidays and learnt lots of new things.&amp;nbsp;

Next month (August 17th) we are going for a walk in Coate Water Park followed by a meal in the Sun Inn.&amp;nbsp;

    <description>Many village events took place over the weekend of 10th -12th June 2016 in celebration of the 90th Birthday of HRH.

On Saturday 11th June, between 3pm - 5pm a Royal tea party was held in the village hall hosted by Broad Town WI. &amp;nbsp; The&amp;nbsp;event was a huge success with 90 people enjoying an afternoon tea and Royal themed quiz with the backdrop of historical footage of Her Majesty playing on a big screen. &amp;nbsp;A big thank you to all who came and all who helped with setting up, serving and clearing away. A great weekend, thanks to the organising committee for all their hard work.

    <description>This month we visited TWIGS community garden in Cheney Manor for a guided tour of their lovely gardens. &amp;nbsp;It was very interesting and enjoyable.&amp;nbsp; Working in the gardens and the craft studio attached, is very therapeutic and helps people with mental health issues.&amp;nbsp; There is also a caf&#233; where people can work when they are feeling better, as a step towards going back to work.&amp;nbsp; Members enjoyed the tour of the beautiful peaceful gardens and were able to purchase some of the lovely plants grown there. The gardens are open to the public on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday; if anyone would like to visit.

In July (20th) we will be having a talk, in the Village Hall, by the University of the Third Age in Marlborough.&amp;nbsp; They will tell us about the life enhancing opportunities for the retired and semi-retired offered by the organisation.&amp;nbsp;

We are a friendly group and welcome new members. &amp;nbsp;Our meetings are generally held on the third Wednesday of the month in the Village Hall. &amp;nbsp;If you are interested in visiting us please contact Kate on 01793 731536. &amp;nbsp;We are also on the Broad Town Village website and on Facebook.

    <description>This month we were out and about again visiting Woodhill Park Farm in Bushton to see their robotic milking parlour.&amp;nbsp; Our kind hosts Peter and Anita Gantlett showed us how the&amp;nbsp; cows take charge of their own milking, coming in from pasture when they feel they need milking and queuing patiently (mostly) to go into one of the two milking stalls.&amp;nbsp; The robot cleans the teats, then attaches the suction cups by using laser guides. It also weighs the cow and then administers the required amount of grain feed.&amp;nbsp; The cups are removed automatically when all milk has been taken.&amp;nbsp; It was fascinating and apparently leads to happier cows and so higher milk yields.

Next month on the 15th June we will be visiting the TWIGs community garden in Cheyney Manor Swindon.&amp;nbsp; This is a special garden that is used to help people with mental health issues.

We are a friendly group with members from all over the area and generally meet on the third Wednesday of the month in the Village Hall. If you would like more information please contact Kate on 01793 731536.&amp;nbsp; We are also on the Broad Town Village website and Facebook.

    <description>This month members went to Westlecott Bowls Club in Old Town.&amp;nbsp; We were given a talk about the Club and then shown how to bowl on their amazing indoor green.&amp;nbsp; They also have an outdoor green with fantastic views, but it was a bit cold for that!&amp;nbsp; We were then allowed to have a go ourselves.&amp;nbsp; Allowing for the bias on the bowl was a little tricky to start with but everyone improved by the end.&amp;nbsp; We were also treated to tea and biscuits.
